One can never read to many pieces of wise advice before heading out into the wild, I always find. So here is my share of wisdom, or at least things which to know I found useful. As in “Do bring a sewing kit” and “Don’t bring Thoreau’s Walden”.
Lassen Volcanic Nationalpark is in my humble opinion one of California’s more underrated national parks. Which meant that when we visited it in August it was surprisingly non-crowded. Surprisingly, because sight-wise Lassen turned out to be one of my favourite parks. Weird volcanic mud action, beautiful mountain scenery and one of the easiest 3000-meter-peaks to climb.
Roadtripping around Iceland, a country notorious for its fierce storms and constant weatherchanges, in late fall? I really wasn’t sure whether this was one of my better ideas. Yet I have wanted to visit Iceland for years and was able to take some days off work in late October, so I decided to give it a go. Turns out, the idea wasn’t so bad after all – here is to ten days of spectacular nature, tiny horses and a bunch of mad sheep.
The Churfirsten are one of the most iconic mountain ranges in Switzerland. And though their south face shows spectacular cliffs towering above Walensee, the seven peaks are actually fairly easily reached via their northern side. In case of the Selun the quest is rather straight forward – the trail doesn’t even bother with switchbacks most of the time but goes straight up the back of the mountain. It is not really the most interesting trail, and the hike feels more like a regular workout. A vast wasteland lies hidden between the mountains of Braunwald and Klöntal. A wasteland of rock and rubble and treacherously deep crevasses. A trail winds through this maze-like landscape that lets you experience a feeling as if you’ve landed on the moon in a fairly easy day-hike, that I hugely enjoyed.
